Does anyone else wish that they combined Bori Khan (Shan Yu) and Xianniang into one character in the live action remake?
We would have loved to have seen a female antagonist that was the leader of the Huns to parallel Mulan leading the Chinese army. It would have made a more cohesive and tighter story. Imagine how cool the final battle would have been if Mulan fought her equal or possible superior. Xianning having much more experience (with using her chi and fighting), so Mulan would have had to find ways to outsmart her, similar to the original.
We understand that there is oppression for women in Asian culture, however, having Mulan fight someone who parallels her would have given the movie an opportunity to showcase her own weaknesses and how she overcame societal expectations. Just like in life, it’s the process of overcoming that reveals her true strength. 🌸💪🏻
